Celebrating the Life of Kit Collins, rscj

On Thursday March 18, 2010, Sister Kit Collins passed away at her home in Washington, DC. She lived her life as an advocate for the poor, a champion of justice, and a true example of the expansive and unconditional love of Christ. Through her ministry in education and at the Center for Educational Design and Communication, she touched innumerable lives, making the world a better place for all those who crossed her path. Audi mocks those who care about the environment, then tries to sell them a car

I have to wonder who Audi is targeting with this ad. Are they really mocking their target demographic and then trying to sell them a car? I suspect they are trying to target the people who haven't yet worked up the energy to ride their bike more often, who realize the environment is important and that they should be doing something about it, but all that they know in terms of alternatives are stereotypes (which Audi plays firmly into as they try to sell more cars, making people who choose other options look uncomfortable, inconvenienced, or dorky). Either way, I agree with @chrisbaskind that the ad is "ill-considered."

CEDC Workers Make the News...for Flooded Basement

CEDC's Executive Director and Assistant Director made the local news yesterday. Unfortunately it was because of a flooded basement and not something more positive. The video and transcript excerpts come from ABC-7 News.

Lunch hour: Joint action on the "new green economy"

I hopped on my bike for an extended lunch hour today and I joined a group of folks who were calling for building a green economy and a binding global treaty, new green jobs, carbon caps and the like. We had helped Avaaz.org put together some stickers and a large banner so it was neat to see those in action as well as some of the other paraphernalia Avaaz and the other organizers had built and gathered (green hard hats, white worker's overalls spray painted with slogans, windmills, a big wall posted with local green stories that had been submitted via the web, etc.)

Friendship school students meet President Obama

On March 24th, President Obama placed a phone call to the astronauts on the International Space Station and Friendship School students were there! Friendship Public Charter School has been a long-time parter with CEDC and we were excited to read that some middle school students from Friendship were invited to be present during the phone call.

Friendship Public Charter School mentioned in front page Post article

Another CEDC partner, Friendship Public Charter Schools, got a mention in a front page article in the Washington Post today. The article is discussing the experiment that is the DC charter school system and the gains in test scores over DC Public Schools. Here's an excerpt:
